Day One--11/9/2010

Day One: Nov. 9th, 2010--Today we broke ground on our building project! A couple weeks ago, our family had a ground breaking ceremony with shovels...today is when the big guns were brought in! I let the big kids come with us to see them dig over the lunch hour. It took them about 20 minutes with backhoe and a bulldozer to uproot about 5 trees and take apart the slab of an old corn crib. We felt the ground rumble beneath us when they would pull huge slabs and let them fall to the ground. We returned to see their progress around 5 p.m. and they'd nearly finished digging the basement and leveling the front grade of the entrance to the house. You can see Steve standing in the hole and the dirt is higher than he is. That is because we'd like to have 9 ft. ceilings in the basement and they've had to raise the grade to accommodate that! Day two will bring the laying of the footings for the foundation...stay tuned.
